- Tetrahydromagnolol is one of the primary metabolites of magnolol, which is a highly bioactive lignan found in the bark of Magnolia officinalis. When magnolol is taken orally, it becomes metabolized by various enzyme systems, which then yields tetrahydromagnolol as one of the primary metabolites. Tetrahydromagnolol is even more bioactive, and most interestingly becomes a much more potent and selective cannabinoid CB2 agonist!
- Magnolia bark is known for its ability to induce relaxation, boost mood and support healthy inflammatory response. These effects can be attributed to two different compounds, magnolol which is more active on the endocannabinoid side, and honokiol which is more active on the GABAergic side. When these compounds are hydrogenated, their respective affinities drastically increase. For tetrahydromagnolol, this means that it is about 19 times more active at the CB2 receptor than its parent compound.
- Magnolia officinalis bark has traditionally been used for mood improvement, largely due to its GABAergic properties. Tetrahydromagnolol, as a CB2 receptor agonist, can also positively impact mood by supporting healthy inflammatory response in the brain, which has been linked to low mood and impaired cognitive function.
